A seizure after a vaccination

Mumbai-based homeopath and counsellor Dr Surbhi Jhunjhunwala’s daughter faced a vaccination reaction which led her to begin questioning what she and her patients give to their children.

5-year-old daughter, after her regular booster dose, had an episode of seizures and collapsed. It scared us all. She was completely fine earlier and had no such history and it was certain that the vaccination had caused it. In fact we even got a call from the manufacturer who apologised and said would look into the same.

Though this was a rare case, our paediatrician mentioned that in future, we have to be very careful, and avoid giving her any vaccination as it may prove to be lethal for her.

If even one in a thousand children may suffer side effects, we should be informed about this. We must all understand this simple fact that a vaccination is not like a protective cover from a disease. If you take a chickenpox vaccine, then it doesn’t mean you will never get infected with chicken pox. For example BCG, the TB vaccine, is mandatory for all babies. Yet in Mumbai we have hospitals dedicated to TB! So is the BCG vaccine outdated? Is the bacteria too advanced for the vaccine? We need to start questioning what we give to our children.

I am a strong believer in naturopathy and healing through food. Why not focus on building our immunity through eating right, through tulsi and turmeric? Think about it, nature’s offerings haven’t changed, but a flu shot gets revised every 6 months or 1 year, so which one is stronger? My practice involves lots of pediatric cases and most of my patients since a few years have not taken any flu shots and in fact I have barely seen them as they don’t fall sick!
