From the desk of Dr Nandita Shah

At SHARAN, our vision is a disease-free healthy world for all.

To my dismay each year we see more and more chronic disease cases: cancers, auto-immune diseases and chronic kidney disease, to name a few, are growing in numbers. This is frightening as these diseases require much more time and effort to reverse. Psychological illnesses have been increasing too.

A big cause of this may be the post-lockdown desire to consume, travel and make up for lost time. Pollution levels are higher than ever in most cities. The increasing stress to keep up with others, not to mention the direct effects of the Covid virus and the vaccine on some, are also contributing.

This is why we need to now be more proactive than ever about our health. An ounce of prevention is better than a ton of cure. And while change is difficult, it’s truly getting easier by the day. Today you can travel to any place and still get plant-based meals. Our city directories had shrunk in 2020 but are now growing again as organic and plant-based businesses grow and thrive. And there are alternatives for everything that you may worry about being deprived of.

It’s a matter of a shift in mindset. Once you decide that you want to get healthier, you will. And remember, don’t do nothing because you cannot do everything. Do whatever you can. You will get there.

You can set health as a goal for 2023 and we are here to help you! All information and over 500 recipes are available on our website and YouTube channel for free. We also have free publications for download and many free programs. However, if you need more help or support, we have consultations, cooking classes, yoga & diet programs, retreats, workshops, challenges and so much more. Join us anywhere & get your health in shape. For details click here

  • 1 tbsp roasted almond flakes
  • ¼ cup tofu ricotta

For the dressing

  • Juice of 2 small lemons

Steam beetroot until tender. In a bowl, mix the beetroot, olives, salad leaves, onion and almond flakes. Keep aside. Prepare dressing in a separate bowl by mixing all the ingredients together. The year 2022…

Every time we go on a long-distance drive, we tend to frequently check if we are on the right path. Life is the biggest and the best long-distance journey that we ever take, so we need to pause often to reflect and assess that we are on the right path.

Our mission at SHARAN is to build a culture of health. It saddens us to see so many people fall ill when it is so easy to stay healthy. What also motivates us to keep going is the plight of millions of innocent animals and the degenerating condition of our environment. Truly, just by changing what we eat, we can build health and compassion and also protect our planet. It really cannot get easier than that.

So, our action plan is to bring awareness and provide support. This is how we did it in 2022.

1. Over 250 events

With life nearly getting back to normal and our team growing, we were able to conduct online events, on-ground sessions, retreats and workshops – free and paid. We truly believe “Alone we can do so little. Together so much more.”

2. Challenges

We understand group motivation and a set goal make a big difference. This year we conducted quite a few challenges – Healthy Food Challenge, Smoothie Challenge, Raw Challenge & even WhatsApp series menu challenges. Fun plus results were guaranteed!

3. Kids Focus

It is important to begin early as health is one of the most enduring gifts parents can give their child. We did free talks on Mother’s Day and Children’s Day and also conducted specific workshops on pregnancy, obesity and how to introduce healthy foods to children.

4. DefEAT Diabetes

A first-ever unique 6-week program was also launched. Dr Lakshmi Sundar and Chef Neelima Sriram from our team designed and conducted this program to help participants reverse diabetes in a group setting, with a lot of individualisation through one-on-one consultations.

5. Yoga for Health

We combined yoga and health by focussing on both the physical and mental aspects of health. We conducted yoga workshops for specific situations like pregnancy, hormonal imbalance, diastasis recti and more.

6. Eco-Kaki

We launched this series focussed on the environment, which was a huge hit, all thanks to our Eco-Kaki Dr Suman Govil.

7. Offline events

Yes, we have resumed our live offline events. These are amazing as we build a sense of community and you get to taste the food which speaks for itself. We have had live cooking classes and potlucks in Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Jamshedpur, and even Dubai and Denmark! Seminars were conducted in Jamshedpur too.

8. Retreats

The retreats are the best since you not only sample the food but you immerse yourself in this lifestyle with coaches that are passionate about helping you get on to the right path. No matter where you are on the spectrum you should expect a significant shift by attending a retreat. This year we had a life-transforming retreat almost every month.

9. The Health Bingo

Participants loved to play this game online with us, and many won prizes too!

10. Festival Recipe Booklets

We also released Navratri and Diwali booklets online. You can download them for free from https://sharan-india.org/publications/

11. A New Organic Farmer’s Market

This is held every Friday in Vashi, Navi Mumbai in collaboration with Goldcrest High School. This is an awesome opportunity to teach youngsters healthy eating at the same time.
